What is SaaS?
SaaS, or Software as a Service, is a cloud computing model that delivers software applications over the internet. Instead of users installing and maintaining software on their devices or servers, they can access the software through a web browser, paying for a subscription to use the service.
So, based on the definition above, SaaS can be boiled down to 3 basic core characteristics:
Cloud-based access: SaaS applications are centrally hosted in the cloud.
Shared infrastructure and seamless upgrades: SaaS uses a shared system that allows vendors to update applications centrally. This ensures that all customers receive the latest and most secure versions at the same time.
Subscription-based pricing: SaaS uses subscription models that typically ask customers to pay on a monthly or annual basis, with some pay-as-you-go options, aligning costs with the actual period of active application use.
The diversity of SaaS vendors
The SaaS market comprises a diverse array of software vendors and products. This landscape spans from small, single-product vendors to industry behemoths like AWS and Google.
SaaS products exhibit a wide range, encompassing everything from video streaming services to IT business analytics tools. The applications cater to fundamental business needs, covering areas such as email, sales management, customer relationship management (CRM), financial management, human resource management (HRM), billing, and collaboration.
A multitude of software categories exists, each with distinct features. SaaS products are often targeted at B2B, B2C, or both markets. Renowned examples of SaaS products encompass Salesforce, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office 365, HubSpot, Slack, Asana, and numerous others. These SaaS applications span a diverse array of business functions and industries.

- Website Domains
- Private subscriptions like Netflix or Spotify
- Subtitling or translation services that are available for a monthly fee, since there is an actual person behind the specific service provided to you
